To put this in perspective, let’s compare some cities’ death tolls: Baltimore (more than 300 per year); Washington, D.C. (similar to Baltimore); Chicago (more than 500 per year). L.A., New York, Atlanta ... add as many as you like. These figures include all ages. Now, average 55 million over 40 years and divide that by 365 days. The average per day is almost 3,800 children legally killed without guns. Have you ever seen that printed or spoken about in the liberal news media?

When people start considering these facts, and with no accountability for killing these children because it’s legal, then maybe gun violence won’t seem as culpable.

I’ve never been for or against gun ownership, but because of the government and uninformed followers, I’m becoming pro-gun.

Commissioners made wrong call with Fairplay fire co.

To the editor:

Foul play for Fairplay Volunteer Fire Co. is all I can say. To follow the logic of the Washington County Commissioners is tantamount to asking your friends to help you build a house for free, then when they can’t show up because they all have jobs to support their families, you tell them not to ever come back and help, and cut them off at the knees.

This is the most ludicrous decision I have heard in years and absolutely the wrong way to treat volunteer members of any community, as well as the community itself. I hope that all of Washington County remembers this when this group of commissioners is out begging for re-election.

If you are so concerned about a 26 percent negative response time for EMS during regular working hours for these volunteers, maybe it is time for you to cough up the funding to assign full-time EMS personnel during those hours, as other area counties have done. I just hope that those who have volunteered in the past continue to serve their families and businesses in Fairplay.

Inaugurations of sitting presidents waste money

To the editor:

It is my opinion that having an inauguration for a sitting president is a total waste of time and taxpayer money. It is basically for the elite and so-called local elite to have a party at the expense of the taxpayer. It is my belief that an inauguration should be for a personnel change in the position.

What have we endured with the current president? We continually are informed of how our government is about to go over a fiscal cliff and extending the debt limit — what a sad state of affairs. We elect our representatives believing they are there for our protection and the good of our state of affairs, i.e. safety, financial status, etc. What do we get? Waste and promises never kept.

We are well on our way to socialism under the current leadership, or lack of leadership, by the current president. What a sad way to lose the USA. I have never seen such an abuse of power and waste of our government and the unbelievable number now employed by our government.

I certainly did not vote for the current president. Yes, I am upset.
