The National Rifle Association (NRA) has come up with some really good ideas to help confront gun violence in our country. If you were listening last week, Wayne LaPierre, the NRA vice president, said “the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.”
LaPierre went on to suggest that the only way to prevent school tragedies such as the recent one in Newtown, Conn., was to place an “armed” officer in every school.
Perhaps he might take that logic even a few steps further.
In New York state last week, someone set their house on fire, called the volunteer fire company and then shot and killed two of the first responders while injuring two more responders with gun fire before he shot himself.
I’m sure at any moment LaPierre will proceed to another podium and suggest that all volunteer fire companies should be armed when responding to a fire.
What about protective armor vests?
The police wear protective armor vests to protect them from being shot. Correctional officers wear protective vests when working segregation tiers.
Maybe all first responders should wear protective vests, too.
That would surely make us feel better when a shooter goes crazy.
Maybe LaPierre might also want good guys armed to the teeth at other places like department stores, gambling casinos, Valley Mall and movie theaters to prevent future tragedies.
It might even be a good idea for everyone to arm themselves to the maximum at home because you know if some crazed individual would go to a school and kill innocent kids, they would have little trouble dropping by your house and doing some harm to you as well.
Building a bunker and having a few firearms around might not be a bad idea after all.
The world is becoming a really dysfunctional place.
Maybe if LaPierre’s ideas catch on, we can hire some armed staff to provide escort for our elderly on shopping trips or to the doctor’s office.
The elderly are always easy prey for bad guys.
Perhaps we should add armed officers to the new senior center on Willard Street when it opens.
How about a nursing home? Pretty doubtful any shooters will show up there — no one visits a nursing home.
Maybe we can get armed security for our local banks since bad guys with guns are showing up there with some regularity.
