Susan G. Beard, 66, of 17735 Red Oak Drive, Hagerstown, Md., passed away in the arms of her husband Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2012, at Meritus Medical Center.
Born March 5, 1946, in Hagerstown, Susie was the daughter of the late Louis Ambrose Snyder and Frances Meyers Snyder.
On Dec. 22, 1973, she married Robert J. Beard Jr., her devoted husband of 39 wonderful years.
Susie was a graduate of the South Hagerstown class of 1964 and graduated from the former Hagerstown Junior College with an A.A. degree in 1966. She returned to Hagerstown Community College in the fall of 1996 to pursue a second career in web page design. She was employed at Potomac Edison from 1986 to 1996 before her return to college to follow her computer software and web design passion.
Susie's life was defined by her avid enthusiasm and compassion for animals. Her affection and devotion to her long line of beloved pets often took precedence over her own wonts. She was a past member of the Mount Vernon Tibetan Terrier Club and the American Kennel Association, and was a staunch advocate of animal rights and humane treatment toward animals. Susie's kind and gentle spirit and her refusal to ignore an animal that was lost or in distress endeared her to her family members, neighbors and friends.
In addition to her happiness received through her animal "family members," Susie's marriage was one of unparalleled love and devotion to her husband, Bob. Their marriage rarely saw each without the other or in close contact with the other, regardless of schedules or work commitments. Their many trips through the South and her love for Colonial Williamsburg, Va., Savannah and Tybee Island, Ga., the Orlando and central Florida area and Disney, as well as her love for Sanibel Island and Captiva Island, Fla., created a myriad of wonderful memories and stories of warm breezes, palm trees, days by the pool at Disney, The Haunted Mansion, Electric Parade, Buzz Lightyear, sunsets over the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico, blue crab feasts on the Florida coast with Dave and Sandy, adventure, friends and family, and always that "great" antique discovery. At the time of her illness, she and Bob were preparing for their 44th trip. Another part of Susie's life that gave her great pleasure were the trips to New York for visits and "adventures" with her beloved grandsons, Robbie and Chris, her son, David, and his wife, Nancy, as well as the weekly summer concerts at nostalgic Pen Mar Park, side trips to Gettysburg, Pa., and a shared love of reading with her cousin, Fran. Susie's sparkling eyes, beautiful hair, and gentle smile will be sorely missed but fondly remembered and never forgotten by her friends and family.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Bob; her son, David L. Beard and daughter-in-law, Nancy, of Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.; twin grandsons, Robert W. and Christopher K. Beard of Briarcliff Manor; cousins, David L. Baker and wife, Sandy, of Montverde, Fla.; Fran Marshall of Hagerstown; mother-in-law, Elizabeth M. Beard of Cincinnati, Ohio, and formerly Chambersburg, Pa.; sister-in-law, Marianne Lord and husband, Gary, of Cincinnati; brothers-in-law, David M. Brown and wife, Patti, of Loomis, Calif.; Dr. Spencer A. Brown and wife, Roxanne, of Pittsburgh, Pa.; Bruce W. Brown and wife, Scotty, of The Woodlands, Texas; nieces, Kelsey Brown of Denver, Colo., Amy Taylor of Cincinnati; Corrie Lord of Cincinnati, Tamina Crook of Greensboro, N.C. and Keersten Brown of Lopez Island, Wash.; nephews, Austin Brown of Loomis, Calif., and Jared Lord of Cincinnati. She is also survived by her adoring golden retriever, Tally, flat coated retriever, Tybee, and Maine Coon kitten, Mickey.
A memorial service and celebration of Susie's beautiful life will be held at a later date in a place of personal significance to Susie and Bob.
Memorial donations may be made to the following organizations, of which Susie was so very fond: CROW (Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife), Sanibel Island, Fla.
