With thousands of titles by, for and about women and with a huge selection of children's literature, the shop offers a variety of fiction, biography, non-fiction, memoir and essay titles. The eager staff is quick with recommendations and knowledge of even highly-obscure titles, and one can't help by notice Women and Children First's brand of customer service feels more like a spirited book discussion with a literature-impassioned friend. The contagious spirit of the staff coupled with the blending of small, local titles alongside international bestsellers helps to create the undeniably community-driven feel of the shop, which is further demonstrated in the book store's unwavering support of local authors. The store attracts enthusiastic crowds with its frequent events ranging from emerging authors to a past roster of guests including Sandra Cisneros, Dorothy Allison and Margaret Atwood.

  20. The battle over war stories: Is authenticity enough?

When Stephen Crane wrote "The Red Badge of Courage" (1895), his Civil War scenes were so sharply persuasive that the author's contemporaries assumed he was a combat veteran. He wasn't. The success of Crane's slim novel is a notable exception to the general rule of artistic renderings of war: If you haven't been there, you're not entitled to describe it.
