1. Ruben Barrales, party guy

When President Obama told students in Mexico that without the support of U.S. Latinos he would not be president, he wasn't talking about the GOP's Ruben Barrales. But Barrales gets the message. He is the son of immigrants, and San Mateo County's first Latino supervisor. Mexico gave him its Ohtli medal, for his work on behalf of Mexican Americans. Once a Democrat, he went to work in the George W. Bush White House and ran San Diego's regional chamber of commerce. His principal task now, as head of GROW Elect, is cultivating Latino Republican elected officials in California, not exactly fertile soil for the GOP of late. He has his ideas why, and what to do about it.

  5. Miguel Bose to be named Latin Academy's Person of the Year in Vegas

The classy Spanish-Italian-Panamanian-Colombian pop singer Miguel Bosé never has gained much of a foothold with Anglophone audiences in North America. That's a pity, because Bosé, a Latin Grammy Award winner, has a talent for cranking out well-polished singles such as "Anna," "Te Amaré" and "Sevilla," as well as an experimental streak that has led to collaborations with Michael Stipe and Julieta Venegas, among many others, in the course of turning out some 30 albums.

  15. New database to help identify migrants who died in desert

TUCSON -- The Sonora desert claims the lives of hundreds of people crossing the U.S.-Mexico border each year. Many of the dead -- about one out of three -- go unidentified. Now, there may be an easier way to put a name to some of these suspected border-crossers who died north of the international boundary.
