11. Brad Paisley's comfort zone: The old, the new (like Hollywood Bowl)

Brad Paisley estimates that he and his family spend a third of their time in Los Angeles -- most of it scheduled, he says, to "get away from the unbearable heat and the cold of winter" in their other home in Nashville. Even so, the country star has never seen a show at the Hollywood Bowl, where he's set to bring his Virtual Reality tour on Saturday night. "I know all about the venue, so I'm really excited about it," he said Thursday in a phone call from Chula Vista. Paisley added that although he would've liked to have spent longer in the Southland, he's headed back to Tennessee following Saturday's concert in order to prepare for next month's Country Music Association Awards. He and Carrie Underwood will co-host the ceremony, which airs live on ABC, on Nov. 1.

  21. News of the Weird: Even mass murderers need friends

Norway is home to perhaps the most inmate-friendly prison in the world (as mentioned previously in "News of the Weird"), but the correctional system has an imminent crisis, as Anders Behring Breivik (the confessed killer of 77 people last year) is nearing formal conviction and sentencing. Officials fear the sociopathic Breivik will try to kill inmates to add to his toll, yet Norwegian law forbids solitary confinement as cruel. Consequently, according to a May report by Norway's Verdens Gang newspaper, the officials have begun a search to select, hire and train appropriate "friends" to hang out with Breivik behind bars to win his trust and prevent further mayhem. Among Breivik's favorite recreational distractions: chess and hockey.
