Dallas Maverick’s Shooting Guard Jason Terry is right at home on the basketball court. Like the rest of the Mavericks, Terry is a true team player. The men he plays alongside his second family, but his first family is never far.
“I don`t think you can find a mom more proud or more honored to be a mother to a player,” Andrea Cheatham, Terry’s mother.
Cheatham has seen her son excel at the sport he’s turned into a career, and seeing him play in the 2011 NBA Finals means more the second time around.
In 2006, Cheatham got sick in Miami, and was in the intensive care unit for more than a week.
“Jason was not aware of how seriously ill I was and I was not aware of why he wasn`t coming to visit me. It was very emotional.”
Today, Cheatham’s health is great and she’s been by her son’s side for every game this season. Thursday night was no exception.
In the last two minutes of Game 5, JET scored a clinching three pointer. After the game, he asked for his mother.
“We just kind of looked at each other and said you know you`re my rock. We both live by faith and the story is already written. We`re just going to live this out.”
Cheatham describes their relationship as one filled with deep love and devotion, but the pair is fiercely private.
“The day of the game we don`t talk I don`t see him. Usually on the way to the bus I`ll see him give him a hug and a kiss and keep the faith.”
Cheatham arrives in Miami on Saturday, and will be there for her son win or lose.
“Just the fact that we were able to do it a second time means a lot. Of course we want to win, but just being able to accept the outcome and we`re here together.”
