OXNARD (KTLA) -- A deadly fire at an Oxnard apartment complex Friday evening has claimed at least one life and left another person critically burned, according to fire officials.

Oxnard Fire crews got a 9-1-1 call just after 6:00 p.m. of heavy smoke and flames at a 4 unit apartment building in the 1800 block of Lincoln Court in the south end of the city.

They arrived to find 3 of the four units burning with two people trapped inside.

Ashwant Narayan, 56, was trapped on the second floor because of disabilities that prevented him from escaping the flames. His brother jumped out of a second-story window and was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

When fire crews arrived on scene they found that the stairwell had collapsed and were unable to save Narayan. By the time their ladders reached the apartment, they found Narayan dead inside.

Fifteen others who lived in the building have been displaced by the fire until at least Monday.
