The Alaska Run for Women is this Saturday. This is the 20th anniversary of the race, which started with about 700 runners. It has seen grown to a race with more than 7,000 women and girls. Last year the run raised more $169,539 from people who signed up to participate in event.
Lesley Yamauchi, a two time breast cancer survivor, ran the first race back in 1993. She has seen become a competitive runner competing in the New York City and Boston Marathons a few years later. She credits the AKRFW with getting her interested in running and she has participated in every race since the Run for Women began.
“It’s a race of sisterhood,” Yamauchi said, “it’s all about participation, in a race for one cause—women and their health.”
You can still sign-up, in person, for the race on Saturday morning from 6:45 am-8:30 am the Anchorage football stadium.
