3. Orlando Sentinel restaurant review: Raga raises bar for Indian fare

Before Raga Restaurant Lounge & Bar opened in October it already had generated significant buzz. The collaboration with Hari Pulapaka, chef-owner of Cress in DeLand, and chef Dominic Sarkar, a veteran of posh hotels and restaurants in Asia and the United States, was an intriguing concept for local foodies.

  5. How to pair wine

When cooking with wine (in the food, not merely in the cook), longtime pairing advice had it to "Serve the same wine that you use in the recipe." Something about mirroring flavors, I suppose, but not always a wise suggestion, especially when, as in this recipe, so little wine is used anyway.

  9. A beef over chicken breasts

Q: What is up with boneless, skinless chicken breasts? I buy them at my local supermarket and they weigh between 7 and 10 ounces each. They're huge. I sometimes trim them down and use the trimmings for stir fry, but part of the reason for buying these is that they are pan ready. If they take a lot of prep, the convenience factor is gone. Also most whole chickens are in the 5-6 pound range rather than the 3-4 pound range that you expect (and that most recipes are written for) for a fryer. I recently cooked a recipe using bone-in breast quarters and by the time the center was done, the rest of the breast was approaching that dry shoe leather consistency. It's exasperating.

  11. The Valley Line: The season of sweater weather and awards

Brrrr, has it been cold enough for you? It has been teeth-chattering weather lately. Actually, I’d rather it be like this than have to deal with triple-digit heat. There is almost no limit to how many sweaters one can put on to warm up, but one can only get so naked in order to cool off.

  13. The Gossiping Gourmet: A reason to go Native

We approached Native Foods Café with a bit of trepidation because our previous encounters with faux meats had been regrettable. However, word-of-mouth has been very good for this casual vegan restaurant, so we headed for the Camp in Costa Mesa and miraculously found a parking space in the always-crowded lot. There is now valet parking for $3 if you're not as lucky as we were.
