1. Eating local: Vegetables and cheese are easy, but Malibu eggs save the day

During the first two days of my one-month local-food challenge, I ate almost solely fruits and vegetables. At Tuesday’s dinner of sautéed local kale and a salad of local beets, local goat cheese, and local lettuce, a hungry family member commented that it was not actually a meal, but rather just two side dishes, and that this “whole locavore thing” was not going to last. Determined to prove him wrong, I bought a dozen eggs from Trancas Canyon Nursery for $5 and I whipped up a quick frittata for dinner.

  3. Dining Review: Peacha's makes for a rockin' hole in the wall

Whiplash is one of the hazards of my job. I take unfamiliar streets when I drive around town with the express purpose of discovering new restaurants. Peacha's, a tiny place on south Victory near Alameda in Burbank, made me do a hard double-take, almost hitting the car in front of me. Luckily, I didn't. Instead, I got to enjoy the best chimichanga of my life.

Honestly, could it get any better than salad sometimes? Big, beautiful, colorful -- and so often simple -- salads are a perfect choice when you're planning dinner in a pinch. Tailor the components just so to please picky dinner guests, or fix one as a vehicle to use up leftovers in the fridge -- salads are easy that way.

  21. Where To Get a Burger A Caballo (a.k.a. With Egg) in Connecticut

Every month has some kind of national food designation attached to it. And it seems like every day is national cheese-covered something day, or blank-on-a-bun day. As we gear up for the unofficial start of summer and grilling season, we celebrate National Burger Day on May 28. But May also happens to be National Egg Month. Eggs and ground beef don't commingle constructively in many cases, but where they really shine is at their simplest: A fried egg laid on top of a ground beef patty.
