Become a WCO for state Fish and Boat Commission

The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission is looking for people interested in a career as a waterways conservation officer. Applications for trainee positions must be sent to the state Civil Service Commission and postmarked by June 23. A written test with the Civil Service Commission must be completed by July 28.

"WCOs perform specialized work in fish conservation and watercraft safety under the jurisdiction of the PFBC, blending law enforcement and public relations duties," said Jeff Bridi, assistant director in the PFBC Bureau of Law Enforcement. "Our officers represent the face of the agency, since they are always in the field and are always interacting with anglers, boaters and the general public."

Applicants must be Pennsylvania residents, at least 21 at date of hire and have a valid Pennsylvania driver's license. Successful candidates must pass written, oral and physical evaluations. Waterways conservation officers are required to wear a uniform and carry a firearm while on duty.

For information, go to http://fishandboat.com/career.html or call 717-705-7820.

Also, please note an error in last Tuesday's Outdoor Ramblings regarding the Cabela's Fish for Millions contest. The fish species and lakes are the number that were caught during the 2011 contest, not the number stocked for the 2012 contest. To find out where tagged fish have been stocked in our area, stop by Cabela's in Hamburg or register online at http://www.cabelas.com/fishformillions.

FRESHWATER REPORT

Wallenpaupack Sports Shop, Hawley (570-226-4797): Mark says walleye action is on at Lake Wallenpaupack. Walleye in the 6-8-pound range are active along the shore at night and hitting Bomber Long A's and Ripplin' redfins. Channel catfish in the 10-15-pound range are being caught off the docks. Calicoes are going after fathead minnows in the back end of coves. Smallmouth are going after swim baits such as Kai-tech lures. Big browns are being caught while trolling in 15-20-feet of water. The perch are still small. The Lackawaxen River is a little high, but Blue fox spinners are catching bigger trout. Light cahill, apple caddis and March browns are good flies. Upper Woods Pond has been good for trout on PowerBait off the shorelines. Greeley and Shohola panfish action with calico and bluegills is good when using red worms and fatheads. Fairview Lake has been giving up trout while trolling at 15 feet with Christmas trees and live bait behind. The shad run is still strong in the Delaware on shad darts and flutter spoons, with chartreuse the main color.

Pecks Pond Boat Rentals, Tackle & Bait, Dingmans Ferry, (570-775-7237) peckspondrentals@yahoo.com; http://www.peckspond.com: Roger says pickerel fishing has started and the Pocono lakes are where to get them. Pecks Pond, Shohola Lake, Greeley Lake, Promised Land Lake and the many other tan-stained waters are producing fish. Dennis Ritter from Bethlehem and his two brothers had dozens of fish and a few bass and large perch from Pecks. Live shiners are working great, along with gold or red spinners. Shad fishing reports near the town of Shohola have also been impressive.

Mauch Chunk Lake Boat Rental and Bait Shop, 625 Lentz Trail, Jim Thorpe, (570-325-0100): Fishing has been great. Jeremy thinks the lack of ice and ice fishing has produced nice-sized fish. Saturday, a man caught a 13-inch perch which was 7-inches around in the cove area and released it. Fishing off-shore is doing well just outside the swimming area with a lot of action with various sized fish. The fishing pier is doing very well again with pickerel and bass. Leeches seem to work best, and if not them, medium shiners. The boat rental bait shop is open 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday until May 25.

Willie's Bait & Tackle, Cementon (610-261-2767): Willie says Kirk Frey of Coplay caught a 24-inch, 4-pound rainbow trout in the Little Lehigh on PowerBait. Strap Raysely of Laurys Station caught three nice trout over 14 inches each, and six smallmouth on the Lehigh River in an hour using minnows. Top picks for fishing are the Little Lehigh, Coplay, the Hokendauqua and the Aquashicola. Beltzville Lake striper action is starting at night, but nothing really big just yet. They're averaging 20-32 inches. Blue Marsh has a mixed bag of catfish, small crappies and bass.

Bob's Wildlife Taxidermy, 4642 Kernsville Road, Orefield (610-398-7609): Bob says the word is that anglers are finding big pools of trout all through the Jordan Creek. Hot baits include fathead minnows rosy reds and butter worms for live baits. Artificial best baits include trout magnets, and some guys are rigging minnows with a trout magnet head. There's a giant Palomino that no one has been able to catch above Wehr's Dam for the last two weeks. Spring gobbler action in the northern areas is doing way better than the people hunting locally so far.

Archery @ the Glenn, Allentown, (610-791-7665): Brian says the PFBC stocked the Little Lehigh earlier this week with its last scheduled load of trout until October. However, Queen City Nursery clubs will continue stocking area streams periodically through June. Some 2,500 trout will be stocked for the Lehigh County Fish & Game contest in the Lehigh Parkway on May 19-20. Reports from customers are that the streams are at nice levels with lots of fish in them. Joe Roth of Allentown brought in a 21-inch, 3-pound, 14-ounce brown trout from the Cedar Creek on Thursday that he caught on a silver CP swing. Andre Eaton weighed in a lunker rainbow trout Thursday measuring 24 inches and weighing 5 pounds, 9 ounces on a Mepps spinner in the lower Little Lehigh. Terry from the shop was at Lake Wallenpaupack and caught a nice walleye, but said the "hawg" smallmouth are still being elusive. Good reports of panfish from smaller lakes and ponds with crappy and perch eating medium shiners and large fatheads.

Heritage Fly Shop, Little Lehigh Parkway, Allentown (610-248-8836): Dave says the water is a little off color because of the rain, which is a good thing. Tricos are hatching in the morning and sulphurs in the evening. Otherwise, it's been slow with angler traffic, but the fishing has been mediocre.

Mike's Bait & Sports Shop, Nazareth, (610-759-2905): Mike says fishing has been good. There are a lot of trout all over. Sulphurs are hatching. Shad action is on one day, off the next. Trout are being caught in the Lehigh on live bait and drifting worms.

Klotz's Bait Shop, Hellertown (610-838-7970): Caroline says Rich Antonacci of Bethlehem caught a 22-inch, 6.5-pound brown trout in the Monocacy. Wally Beck of Bethlehem caught a 21.5-inch brown on a beaded nymph in the Monocacy, and Harry Monk of Bethlehem caught a 23-inch, 6-pounder in the Little Lehigh on PowerBait.

Cabela's, Hamburg, (610-929-7000): Brooke Hoffman says that as the spring-like temperatures warm up, so will fishing opportunities in both lakes and streams. Showers last week have helped keep the trout actively feeding. Trout magnets, small spoons such as the Little Cleo, dressed spoons such as the Cabela's Fishermen Series, as well as small creature baits, including Mister Twister Micro Craws and Berkley Power Nymphs are best bets. Lake temperatures are steadily rising through the 60s, and the bass, catfish and muskies have been actively feeding. Incorporate the Solunar tables into your fishing schedule for even more aggressive action on spinner baits such as War Eagles and Booyahs, or jerk baits such as the ever popular Rapala Huskie Jerks and X-Raps.

SALTWATER REPORT

NEW JERSEY

The Tackle Box in Hazlet (732-264-7711) http://www.striperspecial.com: Phil says fishing has been great. Bluefish are all over Cliffwood Beach and Leonardo. Fluking has been good. The first weekend produced a few 8-pounders and saw people limiting out near the U.S. Coast Guard station at Sandy Hook. Boats are doing good trolling and snagging off Asbury Park.

BARNEGAT BAY

Brielle Tackle (732-528-5720) http://www.brielletackle.com: Greg says the bottom ling fishing has been constantly good, up to 40 a guy. Boats were docked because of the weather but got out Thursday. Bluefish are in the river.

LITTLE EGG INLET

Scott's Bait & Tackle (609-296-1300) http://www.scottsbt.com: Scott says the fishing is lousy because of the weather with wind and rain. With the poor weather, fishermen have been almost nonexistent. Sharks and skates were being caught in the grassy inlet. Fluke are in the bay to be caught, but the weather hasn't been cooperating. Little Egg needs some weather to turn things on.

DELAWARE

REHOBOTH BEACH

Old Inlet Bait & Tackle (302-227-7974) http://www.oldinlet.com: Andy says they're doing real good on stripers right now, and it should continue for the next few days. The stripers aren't quite in the inlet, but they're on the beach and in the 25-30 pound-range with some even larger. The numbers aren't great like last week, but they are great quality fish. Bunker is working the best, but some anglers are switching to clams.
