Winter Park defensive end Trent Harris figured he was on the verge of his first college football scholarship offer, but it came sooner than expected.
The 6-foot-3, 230-pound Harris had been in touch with Northwestern coaches this winter and was awaiting test scores from an early SAT. Once results came back, he figured the Wildcats might reach out. Boston College beat them to it.
Eagles wide receivers coach Todd Fitch, a former assistant under Skip Holtz’s former staff at USF, is now handling Central Florida for Boston College and he told Winter Park coaches he would offer Harris last week. On Monday, Harris got the news directly from Fitch.
‘’The Boston College offer was surprising. That’s not who I thought the first one would come from,” Harris said. “I was expecting Northwestern when I got my SAT score back, so this one really came out of nowhere. It’s pretty exciting.
“I was relieved. It’s my first one so it’s great. They were going to tell me at the school last week but they couldn’t get there, and they just told my coach to tell me, and then I talked to Coach Fitch and the defensive coordinator [Don Brown] today.”
The Eagles like what they see in the 2014 prospect, who is currently ranked No. 11 in the Sentinel’s 2014 Central Florida Super60.
“He just said I am quick off the ball and can be a dynamic player in the 4-3 defense they run,” Harris said. “They’re recruiting me as a pass rusher off the outside end.”
Getting off the line of scrimmage is one of Harris’ best attributes. He had 11 sacks and 50 tackles this past season, including 10 tackles for loss.
“I’d have to say my best assets are my take off and my technique with my hands,” said Harris, who attributes a lot of his success to WP defensive line coach Craig Russell. “I love my defensive line coach, Coach Russell. I’ve learned a lot of stuff from him and I just look forward to having a really good year next year.”
