AT&T wireless customers in Melbourne today will notice their mobile devices are connecting to the Internet at faster speeds.

The wireless carrier today announced that it activated its 4G LTE network in the Melbourne area, according to AT&T spokeswoman Gretchen Schultz.

Melbourne AT&T customers already using smartphones and tablets capable of receiving the faster network will see "4G LTE" displayed on their devices today.

The 4G LTE wireless network provides mobile Internet speeds that are 10 times faster than 3G.  That means customers can now download movies, pictures, music, and play games faster than their previous wireless connection allowed.

AT&T's 4G LTE also is available in Orlando, Daytona Beach, Ft. Lauderdale, Ft. Myers, Jacksonville, Miami, Naples, Pensacola, Sarasota-Bradenton, Tampa-St. Petersburg, and West Palm Beach.

Verizon Wireless, the nation’s largest wireless carrier, is the only other telecom that offers 4G LTE.

Ed Gilhuly, spokesman for Verizon Wireless, said the company erected its first 4G LTE site in Oviedo, Fla. in 2010. The carrier activated its 4G LTE network in Orlando later that year.

Verizon Wireless in September expanded their 4G LTE network to the Tampa Bay area, Fort Myers, and Tallahassee, company officials said

T-Mobile officials announced earlier this month that the company is speeding up its planned deployment of 4G LTE to compete with AT&T.

Officials at T-Mobile said the carrier's 4G LTE will cover 200 million customers by the end of 2013.
