We could disagree in spirited fashion — without calling anyone socialists.
When our side lost an election, we didn't throw temper tantrums, threaten to leave the country or start accusing the guy who won of being a Muslim immigrant.
Nuts simply weren't tolerated — even by those on the same side. Leaders such as William F. Buckley would look John Birchers right in the eye and tell them they were "far removed from common sense."
Yet nowadays, the nuts aren't just tolerated — they're indulged.
Members of Congress don't necessarily agree that Barack Obama is an illegal immigrant … but they understand the concerns of those who do.
Texas Gov. Rick Perry doesn't really believe in secession — but, according to his spokeswoman, "he also shares the frustrations many Americans have with our federal government."
That last part was the wink, the indulging. You're not really that nutty for talking about seceding from the United States — because the governor of Texas understands where you're coming from.
So I say: Let Rick Perry have 'em.
Give him our disgruntled masses, yearning to be free … of Social Security, Medicaid and a national defense.
Yes, my solution to the secession mess is to have all the wannabe seceders head to Texas — and you guys are on your own.
Of course, we'll need to be reimbursed for all the federal highways. Also all the airports, universities and national parks we helped fund.
You guys can keep your rattlesnakes, the Cowboys and ZZ Top.
Oh, and the next time a hurricane comes barreling across the Gulf of Mexico, you're on your own.
Overall, my plan has something for everyone … well, except for the non-nutty Texans who unfortunately have to give up their state.
But there's good news for them, too:
With all the seceders leaving states such as Florida, we should have plenty of houses available here … including several in Mount Dora.
