Re-elect Ron Marshall, Petoskey Ward 4

One of the things I do is attend city council meetings and follow local topics. During this time I have witnessed the performance of Dr. Ron Marshall, and I highly recommend him for re-election to Petoskey city council to represent Ward 4.
Some of the policies that Dr. Marshall has championed or supported include: balanced performance budgets; periodic auditor changes; downtown architectural standards to promote compatible development; incentives for new downtown housing; special liquor licenses for downtown restaurants; neighborhood incentives to rejuvenate aged dwellings; new sidewalks and published sidewalk plans; the Bear River improvements; the Kilwin's project; the interactive public hiring process to successfully fill the shoes of the retired city manager and public safety director; critical review of the West Mitchell MDOT improvements to incorporate public concerns; independent inspections of the Petoskey Pointe retaining wall; and many others.
Another thing I appreciate about Dr. Marshall is that he makes a special effort to meet voters door-to-door as he walks the entire ward during his campaign.
Finally, with his education in economics, Dr. Marshall understands the times. As a professional counselor, he understands people and can work with others to get positive results.
Please vote for Dr. Marshall on Nov. 6.

Vote on lighthouse should wait for full council

Dear reader and concerned citizens,
At a recent Petoskey city council meeting, council members were requested to adopt a proposed resolution that would repeal a previous controversial 2010 Resolution approving the construction and location of a privately owned lighthouse in Quarry Park. At this particular city council meeting were present councilman Tom Postelnick, councilman Grant Dittmar, councilman Ron Marshall and mayor Bill Fraser. Councilwoman Kate Marshall was absent.
It was suggested by councilman Postelnick, that in all fairness, the vote to repeal the resolution should be tabled until all council members were present. He cited that it was with full council that the original resolution was voted upon and approved.
He was allowing for complete representation of all wards and the citizens to be fairly represented in this tabling of the vote. I find it a bit discouraging when some council members do not value the opinion of other council members in their absence. All members of the council take their positions very seriously and seldom miss the meetings except for emergencies or personal obligation previously made.
Council members Grant Dittmar and Ron Marshall voted against the tabling of the vote while councilman Tom Postelnick and mayor Bill Fraser were in agreement with the tabling of the vote until the next meeting when all council members would be present.
From what I can recall, from past meetings, whenever a controversial proposal came before the council for any vote, council members would show consideration and seek the opinion of all council members, either pro or con.
This is just the right and ethical thing to do. It is a sad commentary on our city government when certain council members show little respect and disregard the opinions of other council members who represent residents from their respective wards. Our city deserves better. Remember to vote on Nov. 6.
