  1. The mayor and the lobbyist

Based on what we know so far, there does not appear to be anything illegal about the way Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake has carried on her friendship with City Hall's top lobbyist, Lisa Harris Jones. Strictly speaking, there may not be anything unethical about it either. But it is certainly unwise. Both parties may have good motives, but the situation does damage to the public's trust in government, and it is up to the mayor to find a way to rectify it.

  5. Ulman and Brown: the power of two

Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown and Howard County Executive Ken Ulman shook up Maryland's 2014 gubernatorial race by announcing they will run as a ticket for the Democratic nomination in 2014. Politically and electorally, it's a shrewd and gutsy move.

  9. Inevitability and the race for governor

The 2014 Maryland governor's race has been shaping up so far as a fight about inevitability. Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler long fostered the sense of his own lock on the job through a massive campaign war chest. Lt. Gov. Anthony G. Brown countered by becoming the first to officially enter the race, more than a year before the Democratic primary. Meanwhile, an assortment of potential Republican candidates and two other Democrats — Howard County Executive Ken Ulman and Del. Heather Mizeur — have been trying to make the case that an underdog could win.
