  1. Will Dodd-Frank save (or stifle) capitalism?

WASHINGTON -- It's been five years since the onset of the financial crisis -- the rescue of Bear Stearns in March 2008 -- and we still don't know whether the financial system is safe. In a recent speech, Daniel Tarullo, the Federal Reserve's point man on regulation, contended that substantial, though incomplete, progress has been made. As an example, he cited the doubling of equity capital for the 18 largest bank holding companies from $393 billion in late 2008 to $792 billion at the end of 2012. Equity capital is shareholders' money; it acts as a buffer against losses. Interestingly, JPMorgan Chase's well-publicized $6 billion loss by the trader nicknamed the "London Whale" confirms the point. Despite the loss's size, it never threatened a panic or overall financial stability.

  3. Why Maitland's billboard decision matters

The most outrageous thing about the Maitland City Council's attempt to ditch its 75-year ban on billboards is not that one of the 70-foot monstrosities could soon loom over a quiet neighborhood.

  5. Hans M. Wuerth: 'Where they burn books, they will ultimately burn people'

When on Jan. 30, 1933, then-German President Hindenburg appointed Hitler as the country's chancellor, it changed German as well as world history. Twelve years later, Hitler ended his own life, but not before millions of victims had perished. Several...

  7. Review: "A Curious Man" by Neal Thompson

In 1933, Robert Ripley crash-landed into Chicago, opening his first "Odditorium" exhibition at the World's Fair. At the showing, writes Neal Thompson in “A Curious Man,” a fascinating and fun biography of the "Believe It or Not!" creator,...

  9. This presidential database loves running and Legos

Arden Hayes is 5. He loves Legos and running so fast across the living room to flip onto the couch that his feet end up pointing at the ceiling.
Arden Hayes is 5. He loves Legos and running so fast across the living room to flip onto the couch that his feet end up pointing at the ceiling. He also loves the presidents — especially 11 and 33. Arden knows all 44 U.S. presidents. In order....

  11. (Small) body of presidential knowledge

    Framework
Five-year-old Arden Hayes loves Legos. And presidents. He's been reading up on history and can name the chief executives in order and tell you a little — OK, a lot — about them. When he found out that he shared a birthday with FDR, he...

  13. Obama's superhero delusions

    — President Barack Obama was asked at his Monday news conference whether he has the "juice" to get his agenda through Congress. But presidential juice is like the juice at fancy hotels: It comes in a tiny little glass. The framers were very anti-juice. They designed a system that makes it very hard for the president to accumulate a lot of it.

  15. School in Prague to be named after Mayor Cermak

Eighty years ago, Chicago Mayor Anton Cermak was assassinated, an anniversary that some, like Ald. Edward Burke, 14th, say does not receive enough attention.

  17. Road to recovery? It all depends

As a youth, I marched under the red flag of socialism, a banner that's drooped badly in more recent decades. Stalin made a bloody mockery of Marx's vision of a classless society. Ditto Castro in Cuba. China is an old lefty's worst nightmare: a Communist...

  19. George W. Bush joins public service elite

    Los Angeles Times
Former President George W. Bush was joined by President Obama and three living former presidents in the dedication of his library last week in Dallas. It's important to remember that presidential libraries are relatively new. In 1941, while he was still...

“For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?”—Matthew 16:26 The date Nov. 19, 2012, will go down in infamy for the Bain household. I apologize to Franklin Delano Roosevelt for misquoting the...

  23. For Obama, 2014 is his number

WASHINGTON -- Thirty-one months ago Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell affronted the media and other custodians of propriety by saying something common-sensical. On Oct. 23, 2010, he said: "The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president." He meant that America needed conservative change from the statist course of Obama's presidency (the stimulus, Obamacare, etc.), therefore America needed a president who would not veto such change.
