5. Measure B: Solar savior or shady politics?

Today's topic: City Controller Laura Chick says she'll vote no on Measure B because she thinks "the entire process of how it ended up on the ballot stinks." On the other hand, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and other local leaders tout Measure B as a badly needed green economic stimulus. Which side is correct?

  9. I tried, but failed, to bring ethics to City Hall

Five years ago, when I joined the Los Angeles City Ethics Commission, I was new to government, a bit wide-eyed about what I'd be able to get done and eager to begin shepherding big changes through the system. In particular, I hoped to help clean up a...

  11. Miles to go for L.A. justice

Over the last few decades, it's been easy to blame the leadership of the Los Angeles Police Department, the L.A. County Sheriff's Department and the district attorney's office for the catastrophic failures of L.A.'s criminal justice system. These...

  19. No on Measure A

Los Angeles was once a great place to grow up, and it wasn't just because of the sunshine and the beach. Kids here enjoyed a great public school system, true, but it was more than that. They had an infrastructure of first-rate libraries, organized after-school activities, safe parks, job-training programs and community service projects. The city's best-known contributions to the world were healthy, well-educated, successful young people. Gang life beckoned to some, but youths who wanted to stay out of that life generally could. There were options.

  23. The Times' 2009 wish list

The fates were kind to The Times in 2008. OK, not the financial fates, what with our parent company's bankruptcy filing and all. But five of the 31 wishes we made last year at this time came true; that may not seem like an impressive record, but in the hoary tradition of The Times editorial board's New Year's wish list, which dates to the halcyon days of 1997 or so, we've seldom done better than two or three at a time.
