1. Saying farewell to Steven Muller, one of Baltimore's best

Steven Muller, the president of Johns Hopkins University from 1972-1990, died on Jan. 19. He was one of the giants of his era. I knew him well. I write to share three remarkable stories which reveal the character of this great man.

  3. Rushing Headlong

Are we rushing headlong into new technology with breakneck speed at our own peril? I ask this because I often think we are. It could be I’m just becoming the curmudgeon I thought my dad was. Now I wonder if I’m just becoming that worst of...

  5. Review: A clunky attempt to prevent the end of days in 'Zero Hour'

From Geoffrey of Monmouth to Dan Brown, when it comes to driving narrative, it's hard to beat a good heroic quest. Whether it's the Holy Grail, the one ring, the ark of the covenant or Moby-Dick, draw up a map, create a barely attainable, possibly...

Jack Pariser has something he's eager to share. Giddy, he steps to the kitchen table and brings back a stack of photos, the top few of which show a gray-haired woman posing with his daughter and others. "The last surviving lady who saved us!" he...

  9. Savage Love: Father Figures

I'm a 37-year-old single father with a 14-year-old son. I've raised him on my own basically since birth, with help from some good friends and nearby family. Overall he's a good kid: gets decent grades, rarely gets in trouble. Our relationship isn't perfect — I work a lot and he's a teenager, but no major issues. Over the past year, however, I have become increasingly convinced that he is gay. I've found gay porn on his laptop (yes, I snoop; I pay the bill and I'm his dad), he's shown ZERO interest in girls, and he has always been a tad effeminate, though I know that's probably an unfair stereotype. I have no problem with gay people and I support full equality for same-sex couples. And truly, if my son is gay, while I won't pretend it'd be no big deal and not require a bit of mental adjustment, I'd love him and support him fully.

  11. Holocaust Museum's message: Don't bully

The little girl is only 8, and so she does not yet read newspapers or watch or listen to the local news. But she knew of the death of 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton — some of the older kids she knows had been talking about it. So last Sunday, some hours before the Super Bowl, she said, "Bullies should not ever have guns," and that was the reason that she and I drove to the Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center in Skokie.

  13. Letters to the Editor - Feb. 12

Feinstein’s proposed gun bill should not be passed To the editor: This is in response to Michael Delaney’s letter to the editor on Feb. 2. I looked up the Nazi Weapon Law of 1938 and I suggest everyone else do so, too. It basically did the...

  15. Lyric's take on 'Meistersinger' adheres to tradition

The stunt involving a fire-spitting stilt walker that went awry at last week's dress rehearsal for Lyric Opera's new production of "Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg" threatened to steal the thunder from the show itself. That it did not was a tribute to the strength of casting and superiority of the performances that marked the welcome return of Wagner's richly human comedy of manners to the local repertory after 14 years, Friday night at the Civic Opera House.

  19. A genius and an anti-Semite, Wagner

It takes little effort to find severe problems with the character of Richard Wagner, the man who was born two centuries ago and, as he was the first to acknowledge, became one of history's greatest composers.
