1. News media confidential sources are often what expose government wrongdoing

It took courage for more than a dozen Allentown police officers to divulge what they felt was wrongdoing by their chief, who they said threatened "retribution" on anyone who did so. It also took solid assurances that the chief would never find out who those whistle-blowers were.

3. Jonah Goldberg: Obama has no use for those who disagree with him

Of course the president deserves some of the blame. Yes, it's extremely unlikely he ordered the IRS to discriminate against tea party, pro-life or Jewish groups opposed to his agenda (though why anyone should take his word for it is beyond me). And his...

9. Government dysfunction decried by Obama partly due to US founders and political polarization

Associated Press
WASHINGTON (AP) — The works do seem to be "gummed up" on Capitol Hill. And President Barack Obama isn't the only one to say so. Yet despite years of hand-wringing in both parties, little progress has been made toward changing congressional rules on...

13. Doyle McManus: Second-term scandal plague catches up to Obama

What is it about presidents' second terms that makes them seem so scandal-ridden? Simple: The iron law of longevity. All governments make mistakes, and all governments try to hide those mistakes. But the longer an administration is in office, the more...

23. Oklahoma's tornado and political cheap shots

It's as predictable as it is disheartening: A red state gets hit hard by a tornado outbreak -- in this case killing at least 24 people, many of them children attending school -- and the first batch of letters from readers (most of them from Southern California) use the tragedy to score political points. Sure, many of the letters express heartfelt condolences, but not without landing some political punches before signing off. It's as if Americans who dwell in disaster-prone areas don't have a right to believe in low taxes and smaller government.
