  7. Esther Louise Bender, 69, Meyersdale

    Esther Louise Bender, 69, Meyersdale, formerly of Springs, died peacefully and with a quiet grace Nov. 10, 2011, after winning a courageous 35 year struggle with health issues. Born March 14, 1942, Esther was the daughter of Alton and Rhoda Miller. She was preceded in death by her parents and a stillborn son, Keith Conrad Yoder. She is survived by her husband, Omar Jason Bender, Meyersdale; daughters: Renatta (Yoder) Glotfelty and husband Randy, Ramona (Yoder) Gillum and husband Greg, all of Grantsville; stepdaughters: Wendy Formet and friend Ken Barnes, Ohio, Robin Rishel and husband Rodney, Little Orleans, Md. and Brandi Palmer, Springs; grandchildren: Brock and Whitney Glotfelty, Bethani (Gillum) Hayhurst and husband Christopher, Kyle Gillum, Ryan and Brenden Palmer, Ronnie Smith and wife Mary, Candace Poling and husband Devin, and Kenny Barnes; as well as numerous great-grandchildren. Esther grew up in Springs with her younger siblings Dorothy Otto and husband Brian, Chino Valley, Ariz., Larry Miller and wife Gerry, Grantsville, Md., and Connie Walp and husband Lee, Lancaster, along with numerous nieces and nephews. She was a member of Springs Mennonite Church. Esther held a very soft spot in her heart for her dedicated caregiver of the past few years, Aileen Reiber and husband Brion, along with their children Kiley, Maddie, Ben and Luke. Our family cannot express enough our appreciation for the tender loving care which you gave! Esther was a teacher for the Garrett County Maryland Board of Education for 23 years. She taught at Friendsville and Grantsville Elementary Schools prior to her retirement. She earned her Master’s degree in elementary education from Frostburg State University while helping to raise two daughters and managing the family farm. She was also a certified reading specialist. Loving to express her thoughts on paper, Mom took courses in children’s literature and writing fiction and books for children, and much to the pride of our family, authored and published eleven books, in addition to more than 100 articles for adults and children. Mom lived her life with a quiet dedication to her family, her students, and her readers, and as she wrote in her book, “A Cry From The Clay”,

  19. A. Fern Murray Sturtz, 87, of Cumberland, Md.

    A. Fern Murray Sturtz, 87, of Cumberland, passed away on Sunday, May 29, 2011, at the Goodwill Mennonite Nursing Home. Born Dec. 1, 1923, in Sand Patch, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Irvin and Vera (Petenbrink) Murray. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Layman Sturtz, June 1, 1990, two brothers, Paul Murray and Morris Murray and two sisters, Dorothy Thompson and Thelma Bittinger. Mrs. Sturtz was a former employee of McIntyre&rsquo;s 7-Day Market for&nbsp; 21 years and retired July 15, 1990. She also worked at Bowman&rsquo;s Grocery Store, and McCoy&rsquo;s Department Store. Fern married Melvin Layman Sturtz on August 21, 1942 in Ellerslie, Md. Mrs. Sturtz had been a patient at Goodwill Mennonite Nursing Home, where she had resided for two years. Family was her hobby and life. She was a very devoted wife, mother, sister, nanny, and aunt. She loved family get to gathers. Fern had many friends in and round the community. She will be greatly missed. Surviving are one son, Wayne Sturtz and wife Delisa, Cumberland; one daughter, Diana S. Sturtz, Short Gap; step-daughter, Phyllis J. Huffman and husband Garland, Callahan, Fla.; brothers and sisters, Carl Murray and Karen, Roy Murray and wife Bernice, Southampton Township, Pa., Marie Bucy, Barrellville, Md., Janet Hochard, Boytin, Pa., Bernice Brafford, Fort&nbsp; Ashby, W.Va., Freda Wagoner, Fort Ashby; sister-in-law, Nancy Murray, Kennells Mill, Pa.; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, Pa., Cresaptown, Md., on Thursday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday at noon with Rev. Tom Young officiating. Interment will be in Cooks Cemetery.
