A brawl erupted outside Suffolk County Family court in Central Islip, where 22-year-old Arielle Hardy was engaged in a bitter custody battle with her estranged boyfriend, 24-year-old Anthony Andrews. He showed up with his new girlfriend, Renee Berry and other friends. Both sides got into a verbal barrage after the court proceedings.
That's when the mother's friend, Saadia Taylor intervened and attempted to stop them. Eyewitness Tammy Jackson told PIX 11 News she couldn't believe what unfolded in front of her.
"First the woman was driving and hit her, then they switched seats and he ran her down. He was trying to kill her," she said.
Piercing screams filled the parking lot as the woman lay under the car which then backed up and ran her down again. Witnesses said Andrews was enraged and shouted from the car at the mother of his son, "You knew this was going to happen. You knew this was going to happen."
Court officers and bystanders finally broke it up, and police arrested Andrews and his girlfriend as they tried to drive off. They have been charged with 3rd degree assault and reckless endangerment. They're scheduled to be arraigned in criminal court Wednesday.
As for Saadia Taylor, she is one lucky woman. Indications are that despite the trauma to her body, she'll be okay. She was taken to Southside Hospital in Bayshore where she was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
