5. L.A.'s hot up-and-coming designers

Many big-name L.A.-based designers — Rodarte, Gregory Parkinson, Rachel Zoe, Barbara Tfank, Skaist-Taylor and Juan Carlos Obando among them — have already shown their fall 2012 collections at New York Fashion Week. Now in the middle of Los Angeles Fashion Week, it seems like a good time to meet other designers and labels that are shaping the L.A. fashion scene and giving it global reach.

  9. GALApalooza and a Day on the Terrace mix entertainment with fundraising

The Parkways Foundation hosted its fifth annual GALApalooza, which was the official preview party for Lollapalooza. Guests relaxed on white leather lounges around the Petrillo Music Shell to listen to rock entertainment. For the first time, three Lollapalooza artists were featured: Elizaveta, Walk the Moon, and Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. Dinner was provided by some of Chicago's hottest gourmet food trucks. Stacey Reineking Sather, GALApalooza corporate chairwoman and Parkways' board chairwoman, along with her host committee, raised more than $240,000 to benefit the Parkways Foundation's Send a Kid to Camp program, which will help to send 3,500 kids to camp while engaging 10,000 children and their families with the wonder of our parks.

  11. The expanding world of Rachel Zoe

Some babies have all the luck. The recent birth of Skyler Morrison Berman, for example, inspired a series of baby gifts that could have been lifted from the pages of Vogue: a custom-made sweater the size of a tea cozy from Angela Missoni, a child-size china setting from Marc Jacobs and a shearling snuggly from Georgina Chapman.

  23. Ever-changing spring

Spring is a season of equals and opposites, not just meteorologically speaking. The spring 2012 fashion runways teased trend spotters, showing pajamalike pastels one day and body-hugging neoprene dresses the next. Cropped tops bared midriffs. Peplums concealed insecurities. Still, from the extremes, a few themes emerged.
