Quick Slant: In the preseason, these teams were expected to be equal adversaries. FAU has lived up to predictions — the Owls (1-4) are winless in Conference play and sit at the bottom of the standings. ULM (3-2), on the other hand, has become one of the best stories in college football.
About ULM: Warhawks coach Todd Berry's name is being tossed around in the "Coach of the Year" conversation, and for good reason. In his third year at the Sun Belt's smallest school, Berry — renowned for his offensive creativity — has seen ULM, led by darkhorse Heisman candidate Kolton Browning, gain over 500 yards four times in 2012.
About FAU: The Owls have lost 12 straight Sun Belt Conference games and 18 of their last 20 overall games. They head to Monroe looking to avenge a 26-0 loss to ULM in 2011's final game. The Owls will take the field with the same quarterback, Graham Wilbert, but FAU coaches are hopeful that the team's new offensive system will bring more success.
Things to watch:
1. ULM's offense is amongst the best in the nation, and it's going up against one of the nation's worst defenses. ULM has played two games against defenses in the bottom third of the national rankings — Baylor and Tulane — and the Warhawks put up a combined 105 points and 1113 yards of total offense.
2. ULM set a new Sun Belt record in 2011, holding opponents to an average of 100 yards rushing per game. Thus far in 2012, the Warhawks are letting up a bit more — 116 yards per game — but that number is still good for 31st in the nation. FAU has struggled to run the ball with consistency — the Owls average only 127 yards per game rushing, the second-worst figure in the Sun Belt.
3. While the ULM defense is adept at stopping the run, they'll likely give FAU quarterback Graham Wilbert plenty of time to work. The three-man front of ULM averages less than a sack per game (0.6), putting the Warhawks at 110th nationally. Wilbert has completed 55 percent of his pass attempts in his FAU career.
