  1. Boys in the back of the class

Every year millions of well-intentioned American kids show up for kindergarten or first grade woefully unprepared to learn. Some can't even tell you their complete name, let alone spell any of it.

  3. Two cheers for rebranding

Ever since Mitt Romney lost the presidential election, there's been a lot of talk about how the Republican Party needs to "rebrand" itself.
Ever since Mitt Romney lost the presidential election, there's been a lot of talk about how the Republican Party needs to "rebrand" itself. Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal wants, among other things, for the GOP to stop being "the stupid party." Rep. Paul...

  5. Eric Cantor's empty happy talk

WASHINGTON -- Republicans have happened upon a felicitous new strategy for reviving their party from its depressed state: They need only think happy thoughts.
WASHINGTON -- Republicans have happened upon a felicitous new strategy for reviving their party from its depressed state: They need only think happy thoughts. At a retreat for Republican leaders last month, former House speaker Newt Gingrich told them...

  7. Recipe for conservative revival

WASHINGTON -- Happy days are not here again, but they are coming for conservatives. Barack Obama -- with the lowest approval rating (according to Gallup, 50 percent, four points lower than that of the National Rifle Association) of any re-elected president when inaugurated since the Second World War -- has a contradictory agenda certain to stimulate a conservative revival.

  9. My Predictions for 2013, Audacious and Otherwise

Some things about 2013 are easy to predict. We know that taxes are going to rise, and so will the federal debt. We know that there will be more guns in circulation at the end of the year than at the beginning. We know that Donald Trump will get...

  11. Michigan law shows unions must change or die

Amid the hubbub over the fiscal cliff these past few weeks, an important event happened Dec. 11 that many Americans probably missed: The union movement was struck a critical blow in the state it calls home. That day, a "right to work" law was passed...

  13. The right isn't waving a white flag

The conservative Gotterdammerung is finally here. "Like dazed survivors in a ravaged city, America's conservatives are wailing and beating their collective breasts," opines the Economist's "Lexington" columnist. "A leading conservative thinker," asked by the Economist to "list today's conservative ideas, laughs bitterly and replies, 'Are there any?"'

  15. It's the welfare state, stupid

WASHINGTON -- If you doubt there's an American welfare state, you should read the new study by demographer Nicholas Eberstadt, whose blizzard of numbers demonstrates otherwise. A welfare state transfers income from some people to other people to improve the recipients' well-being. In 1935, these transfers were less than 3 percent of the economy; now they're almost 20 percent. That's $7,200 a year for every American, calculates Eberstadt. He says that nearly 40 percent of these transfers aim to relieve poverty (through Medicaid, food stamps, unemployment insurance and the like), while most of the rest goes to the elderly (mainly through Social Security and Medicare).

  17. Mugging our descendants

WASHINGTON - The election eve mood is tinged with sadness stemming from well-founded fear that America's new government is subverting America's old character. Barack Obama's agenda is a menu of temptations intended to change the nation's social norms by making Americans comfortable with the degradation of democracy. This degradation consists of piling up public debt that binds unconsenting future generations to finance current consumption.

  19. Human Nature Seeds Government Dysfunction

    The Hartford Courant
Elections supposedly prevent convulsions, serving as safety valves that vent social pressures and enable course corrections. November's election will either be a prelude to a convulsion or the beginning of a turn away from one. America's public-policy...

Who's the most influential billionaire business figure in national politics? If you answered one of the Koch brothers (Charles or David) or George Soros, you're wearing your partisan blinders. The former are known for their devotion to conservative...
