1. Researcher leaves behind pieces of black history in Alaska

African-Americans make up just 4 percent of Alaska's population -- but that doesn't mean they haven't influenced the state's course. When it comes to documenting history, it takes just one person to prove that passion goes a long way.

  5. Carrs' first black worker recalls his rise through the ranks

When Alaska achieved statehood, it did so during the civil-rights movement. Alaska's first black dentist set up shop in 1958, and the state's first African-American was elected to public office in 1964. Between those two events, in 1963 Carrs was the first retail store in Anchorage to hire a black worker.

  13. Tamales, L.A.'s original street food

Southern California's latest foodie trend has the region atwitter. Lines form long into the night at the latest hot spot for edible treasures, while wily entrepreneurs outdo each other by parking at the best spots. But not everyone is happy. Brick-and-mortar restaurant owners fume that their pop-up rivals take away business; county health officials quickly enact regulations, and politicians push laws to regulate or even ban the vendors from city limits — but not without sparking a public uproar.

  15. Patt Morrison Asks: U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis

Ahigh school counselor in La Puente once told Hilda Solis' mother that the girl really ought to forget about college and become a secretary. Well, so she has. Hilda Solis is the U.S. secretary of Labor. The daughter of factory workers and ardent union members became the first in her family to get a college education. She brought to D.C. a no-bones-about-it track record from the California Legislature, where she raised the minimum wage, raised the bar for worker protections and raised some hell for environmental laws.

  19. Newton: The impact of the 'parent trigger'

This is what the revolution looks like: It's a rally in Lynwood where parents demand the right to exercise their power to shape their children's future; it's a dozen residents in a South-Central apartment gathering to compare notes on the failing elementary school a few blocks away; it's parents comparing notes at a Pasadena community center and discovering that not a single one of that city's high schools scored a desired goal of 800 on California's Academic Performance Index. And it's lots and lots of T-shirts with messages.

  21. White and mixed-race youths rank high in alcohol, substance abuse

The first-ever survey of adolescent alcohol and drug abuse to recognize youths of mixed race or ethnicity has found that such kids hover closest to white adolescents in the rate at which they suffer substance abuse disorders. That is not reassuring, because white adolescents are among the most likely ethnic and racial groups to have substance-use disorders.
