  3. Safety Should Be Major Concern

I once heard a horse described as "1,000 pounds of muscle balancing on glass legs." That's not far from the truth, and recent tragedies have forced leaders in two sports — horse racing and eventing — to focus on making their competitions...

  5. Sarah Jessica Parker Named Unsexiest Woman

    Zap2It.com
The folks over at Maxim magazine think it's too easy picking Charlize Theron as the Sexiest Woman Alive. They'd rather weigh in on who's unsexy. The unfortunate recipient of the lad mag's Unsexiest title is "Sex & the City" star Sarah Jessica Parker,...

  7. Best of 2007: Sure money

What's in your portfolio? Are you a high-risk investor or do you prefer the slow and reliable clink-clink of blue-chip stock? Personally, I've got all my money tied up in a racehorse named Barbaro. What? No way! When'd that happen?

  9. No Crown for Big Brown; favorite eased, places last

Trainer Rick Dutrow leaned on the rail at the Detention Barn a half-hour after Big Brown had been pulled up in the Belmont Stakes and momentarily dropped his forehead onto his crossed arms. Dutrow's thin brown hair was soaked. His blue shirt soggy. His...

  11. Artificial Limbs: A Hope For Some Horses Who Suffer Leg Injuries

Anyone who owns, rides or cares for horses lives with one big fear — a leg injury.
Anyone who owns, rides or cares for horses lives with one big fear — a leg injury. Horses' legs are delicate, almost too delicate for the weight they bear. An injury to one leg often affects the other legs, which are forced to bear extra weight....

  19. Derby winner to be memorialized outside gate of Churchill Downs

    Associated Press
The image of Barbaro blazing down the stretch at Churchill Downs, all four hooves off the ground as the powerful bay colt crushed the field in the 2006 Kentucky Derby, is seared in Roy Jackson's memory. It's the way Jackson prefers to think of Barbaro,...

  21. Last laughs

Faced with a choice between an eleventh-hour shot at a Pulitzer Prize-winning stroke o' genius and a little holiday-season R & R, most editorial cartoonists took last week off. This probably meant that Benazir Bhutto received fewer graphic obit tributes than did, say, Ike Turner or Barbaro, and that those obscene year-end Wall Street bonuses may go largely un-fulminated-upon. Still, Mike Peters proved again that he's ever alert to a hilarious juxtaposition, and Nate Beeler returned to a classic holiday setup to take down a presidential hopeful or three. I didn't completely drop the ball, although my New Year's Eve gag was more pinot-in-a-box than champagne. Maybe if I'd had a shot at a $50-million bonus, I'd have come up with something better.

  23. Second leg is saddest for Barbaro

Barbaro, the imposing dark-bay colt many believed was the best hope for a Triple Crown in a generation, broke down Saturday with two fractures in his right hind leg shortly after the start of the Preakness Stakes and will not race again, with his survival in doubt.
