3. Padres ownership situation a mess

Forget the Mets' financing troubles attached to the Fred Wilpon/Bernie Madoff connection. Look past the Red Sox's franchise-reshaping, where these days only the uniforms seem unchanged, and the slow-moving sale of the Dodgers.

5. Power rankings: No. 26 Cubs

En route to 91 losses last season and a radical regime change, the Cubs were outscored by 102 runs. As it happens, half of those can be put down to talent and half of them to playing the game well.

8. Does Sveum know he's reading from a bad script?

Dale Sveum sounded so grounded, so non-plussed, so honest even before he was introduced as the new Cubs manager.
Dale Sveum sounded so grounded, so non-plussed, so honest even before he was introduced as the new Cubs manager. And now this. Reading what Sveum was saying at the winter meetings makes you wonder if he already has gotten Cubbed. Or maybe someone...

12. Isn't it time someone important became alarmed over Cubs' arm injuries?

It wasn’t that Carlos Marmol threw a wild pitch to lose Monday’s game inWashington. It wasn’t that Marmol had no idea there was a runner on base and did nothing to stop Jayson Werth from stealing third to set up the aggravating ending. It was that Marmol relieved an injured pitcher.

14. Paul Sullivan's Cubs mailbag

I can't agree with your implication, or flat out statements, derogatory of Cubs manager Quade. He's probably what this team deserves. He stays positive and uses the limited talent he has to work with. I can't imagine Lou Piniella keeping his cool and trying as hard as Quade has, and will as long as you critics give him a fair chance. As I've said before, I'm a Cub fan since Hack, Jurges and Augie Galan. We've had worse teams but none that were a fruitless as this one. John Mulkin, Carterville, Ill.
