  1. Love Walked In

    TIMES STAFF WRITER
Friday February 20, 1998      In the final credits of "Love Walked In," a competent B-picture, special thanks are offered to Columbia Home Video. Well, the home screen is precisely where this picture belongs. It's intelligent and stylish but not nearly...

  3. 'Scotland, PA.'

    Times Staff Writer
Whoever assembled the trailer for "Scotland, PA." is nothing less than a miracle worker for extracting a few clips funny enough to suggest that a transposition of "Macbeth" to a small-town roadside cafe in the 1970s just might make for an amusing black...

Watching Hilary Duff pretend she's a gawky middle-school misfit in "The Lizzie McGuire Movie," one is drawn toward two unavoidable conclusions.
Watching Hilary Duff pretend she's a gawky middle-school misfit in "The Lizzie McGuire Movie," one is drawn toward two unavoidable conclusions. First, that no misfit in the whole history of middle schools ever glowed in the dark as she does. And second,...

  9. 'People I Know'

There's nothing uncommon about failed films, far from it, but "People I Know" is a rarity. Inept in an almost delicate way, this is no "Malibu's Most Wanted" but an ambitious, high-minded flop that wants to do good in the world, a failure with a pedigree,...

  11. 'Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist'

"If at first you don't succeed, try, try again" may be advice film producers would be wise to ignore. After sinking a reported $40 million into a Paul Schrader-directed prequel to the 1973 horror hit "The Exorcist," Morgan Creek Chief Executive James Robinson shelved that version and brought in director Renny Harlin — known as much for his duds ("Cutthroat Island," "Mindhunters") as his hits ("Die Hard 2," "Cliffhanger") — to reshoot it at considerable expense. Harlin's film, titled "Exorcist: The Beginning," was released last August to poor reviews and negligible box office.

What's the limitation on peats? Four? Five? Wasn't it an eight-peat for the Boston Celtics? The Los Angeles Lakers go where no Bull ever tread, in serious search of a fourth consecutive NBA title. It sounds impressive, but two were miraculous, with the...

  21. I Shot Andy Warhol

    TIMES STAFF WRITER
Friday May 17, 1996      On the afternoon of June 3, 1968, feminist Valerie Solanas shot the king of Pop art, Andy Warhol, seriously wounding him and, in effect, marking an end to an era in his life and art. Many contend that Warhol, who died in 1987...
