BALTIMORE -- Right from the start, a horse trained by one not so over-the-hill Hall of Famer and ridden by another took control of the Preakness. The result: a huge upset and the end of any hopes for a Triple Crown attempt at the Belmont Stakes.

    AP Sports Writer
BALTIMORE (AP) — Although no one really keeps track of such things, Gary Stevens had no problem making the assessment with complete conviction. "I guarantee I'm the first grandfather winner of a Triple Crown race," said the 50-year-old Stevens, who...

  13. Rain at Pimlico isn't a welcome sight for Preakness jockeys

  17. History of black jockeys is long, if not recent

Thanks for <a href="http://bio.tribune.com/MikeKlingaman">Mike Klingaman</a>'s article, which focused on Kevin Krigger and his aspirations to break the over 100-year absence of African American jockey winners at the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes ("With the weight of racing history," May 16). One quibble: The article gives the impression that African American jockeys emerged during Reconstruction, when as Mr. Klingaman writes "the sport was young, agrarian and accepting of former slaves and their kin who rode the animals they'd once cared for."
