1. Ravens news, notes and opinions

I think Ted Cottrell, who ruled on Ed Reed’s appeal yesterday, got it right when he overturned the original one-game suspension and instead handed out a $50,000 fine to the Ravens’ safety. I watched all three hits that the NFL cited in punishing Reed and the only one that I thought was really blatant was the one on the New England Patriots’ Deion Branch earlier this season. I’m not saying that he shouldn’t have been penalized on the other two – the hit on Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders Sunday night and the one on New Orleans Saints quarter Drew Brees in 2010 – but I just didn’t think they were egregious enough to warrant contributing to a suspension. Cottrell apparently felt the same way. However, that doesn’t mean that Reed’s out of the woods by any means. He acknowledged as much to my colleague Aaron Wilson yesterday when, after distributing turkeys to a local middle school, he said, “This is not over between myself or the league.” He’s right. Reed will be under the microscope more than ever for the rest of the season and the days of him getting the benefit of the doubt are over. Reed obviously can’t tackle the way he would like because of neck and shoulder injuries, but he’s going to have to figure out a way to wrap up more consistently and avoid any contact near the head and neck area of an opponent. One more hit like that and it’s a near certainly that he’ll be sitting at least a game.

  3. Mike Preston: Pees making right call to move to press box

Ravens defensive coordinator Dean Pees is making a smart move by calling his defenses from the press box instead of being on the field.

Ravens defensive coordinator Dean Pees is making a smart move by calling his defenses from the press box instead of being on the field. I can understand each method -- staying on the field or up in the press box -- but the Ravens have a lot of young...

  7. Haloti Ngata filling in Terrell Suggs' role as pass-rush specialist

A generous amount of doubt surfaced regarding the effectiveness of the Ravens pass rush due to the continuing absence of outside linebacker Terrell Suggs, but no one can blame Haloti Ngata for not doing his part.

  9. Will we see more of McClain at outside linebacker?

Four years ago, when Jameel McClain was in his rookie season with the Ravens, the undrafted free agent out of Syracuse first made his presence felt as a situational pass rusher. The gritty linebacker only had 16 tackles in 2008, but he recorded 2.5 sacks and a pair of safeties -- one more than Ray Lewis has in his long career.

  11. Webb doesn't take pride in his tackling but he should

The Philadelphia Eagles were quickly closing in on the Ravens’ goal line late in the second quarter Sunday when cornerback Lardarius Webb made the kind of textbook hit that we might still be talking about today had the second half not been such a disaster. Blitzing from the slot as he does a few times a game, Webb honed in on LeSean McCoy and put his helmet on the football as he wrapped up the Eagles' Pro Bowl running back.

  13. Burning questions for the AFC North's four teams

With three teams making the playoffs and two winning 12 games during the regular season, the AFC North was arguably the NFL’s most competitive division last season. Unfortunately for the Ravens, it figures to be hyper-competitive again in 2012 -- well, except for anything involving the ever-rebuilding Cleveland Browns.

  21. ESPN's Wiley says Ravens' Reed, Lewis are still leaders on 'D'

I reached out to ESPN analyst Marcellus Wiley to chat with him about the "aging" Ravens defense for a story that ran in Saturday's newspaper, but I didn't hear from Wiley until after I had sent my story into my editors Friday night (I'll cut Marcellus some slack since he's operating on West Coast time). Anyway, I still wanted to pass along his thoughts, especially since he thinks the Ravens will contend for a Super Bowl again this season.

  23. Replace Suggs? First Kruger has to prove he can be an every-down player in the NFL

With the season-threatening injury to Terrell Suggs and the departure of Jarret Johnson in free agency, outside linebacker Paul Kruger was asked repeatedly this offseason about the pressure he feels to fill some rather large shoes on the Ravens defense. But Kruger, a part-time player in his first three NFL seasons, said that before he worries about replacing Suggs, he first needs to prove that he can be an every-down player.
