3. Ravens news, notes and opinions

Having signed all their draft picks except first-rounder Matt Elam, having shored up their biggest perceived weakness with the signing of linebacker Daryl Smith and with very little salary cap room to do much else, it’s hard to imagine the Ravens being too active over the next five weeks before the start of training camp. However, something clearly has to be worked out with the status of Pro Bowl fullback Vonta Leach. As my colleague Aaron Wilson reported last week, the Ravens, who took Leach’s potential successor, Kyle Juszczyk, in the fourth round of April’s draft, are expected to craft a proposal to adjust his contract, which carries a $4.33 million salary cap hit for the coming season. Leach sounds like he is prepared for the situation, telling reporters last week that, “When the situation comes, I think we’ll take care of it.” The Ravens clearly love Leach as a player and as a leader. Without knowing how Juszczyk will handle lead-blocking duties in his rookie season, they believe that Leach, probably the best lead blocker in the game, has an important place on the team. However, they also could use a little more cap flexibility and Leach’s contract may be the most realistic place to get it. It sounds like the situation could come to a head shortly. Like Anquan Boldin, Leach is a proud guy and I’d imagine trying to convince him to take a pay cut is going to be a tough sell for Ozzie Newsome and company. But it behooves both sides to work something out.

5. Ravens need more tough guys after cutting Vonta Leach

The Ravens released fullback Vonta Leach and I understand the logic. The Ravens have been under the salary cap gun since winning the Super Bowl in February, and they will save approximately $3 million by cutting Leach.

11. Art Modell might face easier road to Hall of Fame if contributors separated from players in voting

Late Ravens owner Art Modell</runtime:link> might face an easier path to the Pro Football Hall of Fame if the museum follows through on tentative discussions of putting "contributors" in a different voting pool than players.

The conversation about if Brian Urlacher would reach the Pro Football Hall of Fame likely shifted to when after the 2010 season.
The conversation about if Brian Urlacher would reach the Pro Football Hall of Fame likely shifted to when after the 2010 season. Now it's worth wondering if there is a spot for Urlacher in Canton, Ohio, as a first-ballot inductee come 2018, when he...

15. Michael Oher will still be under siege at right tackle

Even if Bryant McKinnie does not prove to be an upgrade over Michael Oher, his return to the Ravens and the left tackle position should at least strengthen the Ravens at left guard and right tackle, where Oher will likely play.

23. Ravens hope to follow historical trend and find value with 32nd selection

Three months after winning their first Super Bowl in 1983, the Washington Redskins received another reward. With the 28th and final selection in the first round of the 1983 NFL draft, and one pick after the Miami Dolphins grabbed a strong-armed quarterback from Pittsburgh named Dan Marino, the Redskins settled on an undersized but lightning-quick cornerback out of Texas A&M-Kingsville.
