  1. Analysis: Despite No. 1 Post, Orb Still Strong Favorite

    The Hartford Courant
There's a very good chance the post position draw for the Preakness Stakes will not affect the outcome. Nonetheless, heavily favored Orb will be starting from a less-than-ideal spot to say the least. The Kentucky Derby winner drew post position No....

  7. No word on whether screamin' Tom Brady will show up for Preakness

By now you've surely seen the video, below, of Tom Brady getting super, duper excited about Orb winning the Kentucky Derby. In it, he runs over to congratulate Ogden Phipps II, son of co-owner Ogden Mills "Dinny" Phipps. I'm not sure how they know each...

  11. Preakness field coming together slowly

Some years, Maryland Jockey Club stakes coordinator Coley Blind has to turn horses away from the Preakness.  He and other members of the staff may look through the credentials of 20 horses, calculating their earnings -- the Preakness uses a fairly complicated three-tiered system -- to determine the 14-horse field.

  19. Can Maryland racing draw women to the track?

I am a female sports fan. I go to games, watch them on TV, download the apps, read the stats, and buy the T-shirts. I recently heard about the launch of a new professional women's soccer league, and I started thinking about the sports to which I am attached. They are all professional male sports — plus men's college basketball — but I have never thought about why. I suspect it has to do with my age (51), which limited my exposure to girl's athletics — Title IX was just beginning to be implemented when I was in school — as well as my sports fan role model, my father. Perhaps more important, it's because I learned to love these sports before I was 20, and I'm less likely to attach to a new one.

  23. Preakness 2013 shaping up to be another great showcase for Baltimore
