5. A forest of possibilities

With nearly 800 miles of coastline stretching along two oceans, it's no surprise that more than a million surfers and sun worship-pers flock to Costa Rica to enjoy its fabulous beaches each year. But in addition to breathtaking white sands and emerald-azure seas, many of Costa Rica's "riches" lie inland.

7. Lake County Commission Chairwoman Leslie Campion and her colleagues should set future goals

Second of two parts.
Second of two parts. County Commission Chairwoman Leslie Campione has a few things she wants to accomplish next year — roughly eight single-spaced, typewritten pages of them. That is going to be one busy woman. Aside from laying out her goals,...

9. Shuttle gone, Brevard hopes eco-tourism launches new era

Kayaking in the Mosquito Lagoon on a moonless summer night reveals blazing stars and comets — not in the sky but in waters thick with "bioluminescent" plankton.

11. Swooping in to help Laos

It's the fourth zip line that spills the surprise. Confident now, I leap off the platform to feel the cable bounce heavily, then snap taut under my weight. Gravity takes over, shooting me through a tunnel of blurring foliage until the whirr of the pulley-wheels above me gives way to the roar of rushing water. I burst through the canopy like a flying squirrel, and there, not 10 yards away, a perfect waterfall topples over the escarpment brim, fracturing the sunlight into arcing rainbows.

15. In Panama, a taste of the tropics and a new state of mind

Racing through a Panamanian archipelago by sport boat, I couldn't help but feel like James Bond. It was just me and a mustachioed driver, speeding toward a remote island where I would spend a few decadent days at an eco-resort, hiking the rain forest, sunning myself by an infinity pool and sucking down rum cocktails to a soundtrack of rolling, tropical surf.

19. Cruise Port Spotlight: Puerto Limón, Costa Rica

Often likened to a Noah's Ark due to its rich fauna, including 1,250 species of butterflies and multitudes of bird species, Costa Rica is sort of a poster child for eco-tourism. This tiny Central American country -- roughly the size of West Virginia -- has 12 ecological zones and has made an effort to preserve its many natural attributes and wilderness in national parks. It also offers multiple eco-friendly activities: from river rafting to hiking, snorkeling and kayaking, to zip-lining and tram-riding over the rainforest canopy.

23. Florida Eco Tours go off the beaten path

WHAAP!
WHAAP! It sounds like someone is cracking a bull-whip on the surface of the glassy water of a swimming pool. WHAAP! "Hear that?" asks Greg Allard, 60, the owner and tour guide of Southwest Florida EcoTours in Naples. Uh, yeah. "That's a gator hitting...
