1. Preservation Hall Jazz Band performs at Columbus Park in Stamford on July 18

New Orleans' Preservation Hall Jazz Band is taking a break from sitting in with My Morning Jacket at festivals this summer to play a free outdoor gig in Stamford on Wendesday as part of the Jazz Up July series. The group was founded in 1961, and they've carried a particuarly poignant message around the world with them since Hurricane Katrina, proving that New Orleans hasn't lost its spirit. Let loose and transport yourself to the French Quarter, past, present and future, for a couple of hours, right in the heart of Stamford, of all places.

  3. G. Love & Special Sauce play Stamford's Alive @ Five on June 28

Garrett Dutton, the "G. Love" of G. Love & Special Sauce, founded his group using folk music and the blues as a foundation. The Philly band's laid-back classic R&B sound has proven to have staying power, and it's currently supporting its ninth studio album, Fixin' to Die, produced by members of The Avett Brothers. G. Love plays Stamford Thursday night, after work lets out, at Columbus Park as part of the city's Alive @ Five series. They're getting stricter on admission this year, so don't try sneaking out the back entrance of resaturants and offices as we know you have in years past.

  13. Holiday traditions from the pros in the kitchen

When chefs catch a break during their busiest time of the year, the holidays, they often bend tradition. They eat and drink things you wouldn't expect. Matt Storch, chef-owner of Match (South Norwalk, matchsono.com) has two holiday traditions. "The Jewish side, we always have latkes, sturgeon, smoked lox, bagels and caviar," he says. But come Christmas Day, he joins his wife, who is Vietnamese, in her holiday tradition of slurping a bowl of pho — a steaming bowl of beef soup with fresh rice noodles, seasoned at the last minute with fresh cilantro and basil.
