11. New 'Fast and Furious' report finds DHS warning signs ignored

WASHINGTON — Even as they lost scores of illegal firearms in their Fast and Furious operation, federal ATF agents asked their Border Patrol counterparts not to pursue criminal leads or track gun smuggling in southern Arizona so they could follow the firearms themselves, and senior Homeland Security agents “complied and the leads were not investigated,” according to a new Department of Homeland Security inspector general’s report.

  17. Republicans can't escape blame for sequester

If aliens came to earth from outer space in search of intelligent life, Congress is the last place they would look for it. The Republican-led 112th Congress -- in a good week, in session no more than two and a half days -- let the Standard & Poor's credit rating of the United States decline for the first time since 1917, failed to pass a farm bill, and refused to do anything about assault weapons, global warming or other important issues, as well as voting to repeal Obamacare 33 times.

  19. Oversight on FBI snooping

A federal judge in San Francisco has ordered the FBI to stop issuing "national security letters" to phone companies and Internet service providers, denying the bureau an investigative tool it has used with alarming frequency to secretly gather logs of Americans' calls, emails and related activity. It was the second time a federal court found a key aspect of such letters — the gag order that almost invariably accompanies them — to be unconstitutional. Congress should swiftly change the law to bring more oversight to the process and narrow the letters' use.
