  1. Accused WikiLeaker Manning says he was punished before trial

Army Pfc. Bradley Manning is due back at Fort Meade this week, where lawyers for the alleged WikiLeaker plan to argue that he was punished at a military brig before his case had been heard — grounds, they say, to dismiss all charges against him.

Republicans say they will not cooperate on raising the debt limit in mid-February unless Democrats agree to cut spending by an equivalent amount ("Trouble ahead," Jan. 2). What these trillions of tax dollars are allocated for is instructive. The...

  13. Military families worried by US fiscal cliff cuts

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Emerging from more than a decade at war, military families are confronting a new worry at home: the prospect that a deal between Congress and the White House over federal spending cuts could chip away at military health insurance, pensions and other services long considered untouchable.

  15. John Boehner takes Republican Party over cliff

Well, what do you know? We didn't go over the fiscal cliff, after all. In the end, the country was spared. Only the Republican Party was destroyed. Or, at least, severely damaged. Thanks to John Boehner.

  19. Rights and the 'war on terror'

Congress and President Obama have been buffeted by criticism for the way they handled, or mishandled, legislation designed to prevent the economy from going over the so-called fiscal cliff. Comparatively, little attention has been paid to another recent failure of statesmanship by both of those branches of government: the perpetuation of laws and policies that undermine civil liberties and government transparency in the name of the "war on terror."

  23. The Hagel question

In choosing former Sen. Chuck Hagel as secretary of Defense, has President Obama made an "in your face" appointment, as Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) complains? Perhaps. Given criticism of Hagel by supporters of Israel and gay rights groups, his nomination was guaranteed to be controversial. So why did he do it? After deciding not to nominate Susan Rice as secretary of State in the face of GOP opposition, the president may have been determined not to surrender to criticism a second time.
