In Lee Blessing's Independence, opening on Friday, Kess (Dana Howard of Willington, second from left) returns home to Iowa after four years on her own after being called home by her sister Jo (East Haven's Sarah Potucek, far right). Their mother (Dawn Maselli of Newington, second from right) struggles with mental health issues, and Kess tries to right the household, which is also occupied by wild sister Sherry (Meghan Rickard of Southington, left). The play runs through April 7.

  3. The finest of Spain's fatty fruits, right here in Connecticut

There's this unfortunate (and hilarious) thing that happens on cooking shows, where the hosts say things like "oh, it's like an explosion in my mouth!", or they make ridiculous, exaggerated moaning sounds to indicate just how delicious the food they're eating happens to be. Because I am basically Beavis, or Butthead, or any of the characters from Hot Tub Time Machine, trapped in the wrong body, all I can say is "that's what she said" and titter uncontrollably when things like this happen.

  5. Racial profiling goes way, way beyond East Haven

If anyone needed any convincing that racial profiling by police in Connecticut isn't limited to East Haven's rogue cops, this investigative reporting by the Hartford Courant's Matthew Kauffman should provide the proof.

  13. Clown-O-Meter: Vernon man attacked by teens, saved by woman with golf club

Dawer Gilani, a resident of Bridgeport, has already been arrested for stalking a woman in Fairfield. This time, Gilani allegedly chose to stalk the same woman via Facebook and Twitter using his photograph. Although Gilani used a different name, the woman was able to identify him by the photo and called the police. According to the CT Post, Gilani was taken from his home and charged with 10 counts of violation of a protective order.

  15. Crime & Punishment: UConn TV network in trouble for airing rape jokes

UConn's TV network hosted on its website and twice aired a sketch full of rape jokes. In the clip, part of a student-produced “comedy” series, a young woman runs from a masked attacker only to have the blue-light emergency phones call her a “cock gobbler,” “stinky bitch” and “howler monkey.” “[Y]ou blonde bitches don't understand,” the object says in a Siri-like voice, “always crying about being raped. Suck it up.” In the hilarious finale, the rapist strangles the woman and drags her off. Women's groups and other sensible people on campus were outraged and UCTV issued an apology and took the video off its site (though someone sent a copy to the website Gawker).

  17. Crime & Punishment: Woman leads police on high-speed chase to avoid paying $9.15 tab

Cardinal Edward Egan has had time to think it over and he's not sorry about that outbreak of child sex abuse at the Archdiocese of Bridgeport. Speaking to Connecticut Magazine, Egan, who was bishop of the archdiocese from 1988 to 2000, looked back on the apology he gave in 2002 and declared, “I never should have said that.” Egan, now 79, defensively said that most (though records show not all) of the abuse, allegedly committed by seven different priests, happened before he took over the Bridgeport office. As for failing to go to the police, a la Joe Paterno, and scuttling the priests elsewhere? “I don't think even now you're obligated to report [suspected abuse] in Connecticut.” (Several legal experts disagree.) No word on if Egan feels there is any moral obligation to inform the authorities of child molestation or if, in hindsight, it might seem like a good idea.

Baltimore police officials said Friday that the new heads of training and internal discipline — hires made from outside the department — will help restore public trust in an agency marred in the past year by corruption and a "friendly-fire" incident in which an officer was killed.
