1. Crime & Punishment: An Epic White Trash Saga

Incoming state Rep. Christina Ayala says she won't buckle under pressure to resign following her arrest in a domestic dispute (which follows charges in an August hit-and-run) but the incident is nonetheless jeopardizing her seat. Ayala, 29, requested a protective order against her boyfriend. In the filing, she listed her address as 49 Hillside Ave. in Bridgeport, which is just outside the 128th House District — the one she was elected to represent. Under statelaw, House members must reside in the district they serve. On candidate paperwork, Ayala claimed she lived at 604 Noble Ave., but neighbors told a Connecticut Post reporter they had not seen her recently. The State House leader has told her she must move by Jan. 9, the start of the new session.

  11. A Mad River Runs Through It

A river flows through the deep hemlock hollows in Wolcott. At times it's placid, the waters slowly flowing through the shadows of the dark forest, with the sun and clouds breaking through the canopy reflecting across the smooth surface.

  13. Crime & Punishment: Woman Accused of Sodomizing Her Dog With a Candle

Sick, Sad World: Dawn Dempsey of Waterbury was arrested on animal cruelty charges after veterinarians found that her beagle, Riley, had been sodomized with a candle. The dog died from the injuries while in their care, before they could even euthanize him. Dempsey, 38, told WTNH that the act was committed by her brother, an ex-con who lived with her. "I am not guilty of even knowing about this," she said, adding, "Holy crap." Police suspect her of wrongdoing because she lied at the Mattatuck Veterinary Hospital, claiming Riley was a stray. (Dempsey said she did it because she couldn't afford veterinary care.) Though the brother has not been arrested, police say their investigation continues. An animal cruelty conviction can lead to a $1,000 fine and a year in prison.

  17. Crime & Punishment: Woman Crashes Her Car After Drinking Hand Sanitizer

The Hartford Board of Education gave Superintendent Christina Kishimoto a tepid performance review, and thus it is declining to give her a performance bonus this year. Jeffrey Mirman, an attorney for Kishimoto, took issue with this. The review graded the superintendent in four areas, giving her a score from 1 to 5 in each. Her average score was 2.6, about 52 percent of a perfect score. Because Kishimoto's contract states she is "eligible" for a $30,000 bonus for meeting such goals, Mirman told the Hartford Courant she should get $15,450, about 52 percent of the total bonus she could have gotten. By this logic, if the board had given Kishimoto a 1, the lowest possible score, in every category, it would still owe her an extra $6,000. Only by not coming to work, perhaps, should she be denied anything above her base salary, which is $231,000 a year. (Kishimoto eventually relented and said "pursuit of a bonus, even if contractually obligated, is an unnecessary distraction.")

  21. Crime & Punishment: Drunk, Naked Man Screams at Wendy's Employees in Manchester

Two Connecticut libraries are seriously considering how to handle visits from furries, the subculture of people who dress in anthropomorphic animal costumes. The Hartford Courant reports that the concern started when a fully costumed furry walked into the Enfield Public Library and a "child took one of their 'paws,' just like they would at Disney World, without hesitation," according to a post by library director Henry Dutcher on a listserv site for librarians. The furry didn't have any malicious intentions, but the incident got Dutcher thinking about how such outfits could be used by abductors to lure children. Portland Public Library Director Janet Nocek brought up the issue at a meeting of the library's board of directors, where she reaffirmed the building's dress code. "Face coverings at the library are not permitted, except for religious reasons," she said, adding, "We're not picking on furries."
