1. Connecticut's Sushi Renaissance: Where to Get Great Sushi Around Hartford & New Haven

Connecticut is experiencing a Japanese renaissance. That's easy to see in greater Hartford, where a Hibachi restaurant just moved into Prospect Plaza, Umi in Blue Back Square has brought conveyor belt sushi to the region, and the line at Ichiban was practically out the door on an otherwise dead and frigid Sunday night in the West End. In New Haven, chef Ming Lau of Miso says the resurgence is a good decade old, and customers are increasingly discovering the sinfully high-end Chef Tasting service, in which a chef panders to a customer's personal tastes.

  3. Finding Falafel in New Haven

We're no strangers to the constant struggle between wanting to eat something on the go and not wanting to further clog your arteries or give McDonald's any more American dollars. If a cheap, healthy and portable meal sounds like what you're looking for, we have an answer we hope is not too far off your radar already: falafel. Falafel is a fried ball of mashed chick peas and/or fava beans, typically served in a pita or other handheld form of bread, accompanied by a host of fresh, real toppings.

  11. A Silent Art Auction Benefit for Chris Engstrom at Artspace in New Haven

New Haven, it's time to step up and support one of your own. Local artist and Creative Arts Workshop teacher Chris Engstrom was recently diagnosted with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). ALS is a progressive, debilitating disease, marked by the slow death of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. It effects movement and coordination, which is tragic for anyone, let alone an artist who works with his hands. Local artists have donated pieces to a silent auction to take place Sat., Oct. 27 at Artspace in New Haven, with all proceeds to go toward helping Chris with his medical bills and living expenses. Admission is $20 per person, with opening bids starting at $50 for most works. Should you not be able to make the event itself, you can make a donation online at chrisengstrom.wordpress.com, or via mail by sending a check to Christopher J. Engstrom Trust, TD Bank, 40 Main St., Orleans, MA, 02653.
