11. Crime & Punishment: Trumbull's Hatred of Michael Bolton Costs the Town $75,000

The Town of Trumbull has learned that no one likes Michael Bolton, and the lesson is going to cost them. The town signed the soft-rock singer (best known to anyone under 30 as a punchline in the movie Office Space) to perform at its annual town-sponsored concert at Indian Ledge Park, but sold less than 1,000 tickets. Trumbull needed to sell at least 4,000 to break even, First Selectman Timothy Herbst told the Connecticut Post, so he cancelled the show, which will cost the town $75,000 in fees, though that's better than the $150,000 to $170,000 that it would lose by putting on the show without any additional tickets sold. (Some of the money will come from the $59,000 that went into municipal coffers after its 2010 show, featuring the band Train, made a profit.)

  17. Crime and Punishment: Danbury citizens want Mayor Mark Boughton to stop tweeting about "Jersey Shore"

Like many politicians, Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton utilizes social media. In fact, throughout one recent Thursday, he sent out more than 40 tweets. Boughton's ceaseless Twitter postings do address city issues but just as often the 44-year-old mayor chats about subjects like Adele and “The Walking Dead,” and he is fond of using supposed youth slang, wishing a constituent a “Happy Birthday, Dawg” and asking Danbury High School students to “holla, shorties.” A frustrated citizen wrote to the Danbury News-Times that “his priorities should be school budgets, fixing the housing issues, unemployment and so much more. Instead, we read about ‘Jersey Shore,' lingerie football, getting his wife more ‘swag' and endlessly referring to himself as ‘Bigpoppa.'”
