1. TEST New Storrs Center Showcases Smart Growth

The Hartford Courant
The University of Connecticut was placed in an ideal spot for its original 19th-century purpose, an agricultural school. But as it evolved into a multi-faceted research university, the location became something of a challenge. There wasn't much decent...

5. Occupy Gatsby at Contemporary Art Galleries in Storrs

Two works of literature — Joseph Stiglitz's Pulitzer-winning The Price of Inequality and, of course, F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic The Great Gatsby — inform Gatsby Revisited in the Age of the One Percent, a new exhibit (pictured) in residence at UConn's Contemporary Art Galleries until April 19. Renowned, socially conscious contemporary artists Shepard Fairey, Alex Katz, Julian Opie and many others take aim at life at the top, where Fitzgerald's protagonist set his ambitions a century earlier. Head to the interdisciplinary colloquium on April 15, where interdisciplinary artist Man Bartlett and other esteemed panelists discuss the contemporary art world's dealings with economic inequality, and other modern-day annoyances.

9. Of Puppets and Princes

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's infamous children's tale The Little Prince meets the puppets (pictured), live actors and musicians of Pennsylvania's Bristol Riverside Theatre, as they swing through Storrs on March 3. The puppets were designed by Emmy recipient Michael Schupbach and Monkey Boys Productions, the designers behind the recent Broadway production of Little Shop of Horrors. (If they can handle a giant, talking plant, diminuative royal family members, sheep and pilots are, well, child's play.) One show only.

17. Kosher in Connecticut: Where to Find the Real Thing

Many people who keep strictly Kosher at home will adopt a "when in Rome" attitude when eating out, not limiting themselves to Kosher restaurants. (There simply aren't enough of them and besides, many Jews have a soft spot for Italian food.) However, the beauty of a Kosher-certified establishment is that rare treat of being able to take the food home... mmm, leftovers!

19. Holy Food!: Kosher and Its Imitators in Connecticut

What exactly is kosher? The short answer is a religious certification given to any cooked or processed food that an observant Jew is permitted to eat. A satisfying answer in detail is not easy, so a visual aid may help: picture three identical matzo balls, each floating in its own bowl of soup: one at Shuman's in Bloomfield, the second at Gold's in Westport, and the third at Michael's in Middletown. The first is kosher, the second is "kosher-style", and the third is just an unaffiliated bowl of matzo ball soup. In addition to these three states of existence, the matzo ball itself straddles yet another stratum of culinary holiness: kosher-for-Passover knoshing.
