  3. Town of Marshall devoted to keeping its rich history alive

One of the first things that caught my eye as we drove along Michigan Avenue in Marshall, Mich., was the Rexall Drugs sign, resplendent in blue, orange and white. I couldn't remember having seen one for about, oh, 40 years.

  5. Pritzker Military Library offers oral histories, speakers

The wide windows in the landmark Monroe Building offer a sweeping view of Michigan Avenue and Millennium Park. On a crystal-blue spring day, it's easy to temporarily forget the long, bloody history of warfare. But keeping the stories of "citizen soldiers" around the globe alive for future generations is central to the Pritzker Military Library's mission. The organization provides a combination of wide-ranging programming, exhibits and archival materials to achieve that goal.

  9. Dishing on dining

Q: You have a pretty big audience of friends. I bet they have the some of the same questions for you that I have. When you eat out, do you go with a group of people? Do you order extra dishes just so you can taste them? Do you take notes while you are eating? Is this a journalistic perk? Do you take doggie bags home with you? Inquiring minds would like to know.

  13. Fighting emerald ash borer

Q: We have a beautiful, full ash tree on the berm in back of our house, which at this point is free from the emerald ash borer. Last summer it was fully leafed out, and we have checked the bark for tell-tale signs of the borer such as small D-shaped holes. The tree is about 12 inches in diameter. I would like to do everything possible to keep this tree healthy and would like to drench the soil with Bayer Advanced Tree & Shrub Insect Control containing imidacloprid. Because the application is to be placed around the base of the tree, how far out from the base can I go? The tree is directly on the top of the berm, with a downward slope to the front and back of the tree. After removing the mulch, should I dig down an inch or so to help prevent runoff? Can the drench be done on subsequent days if the soil is too wet to fully absorb it in a single day? When should I treat the tree?

  21. CSO series explores connections between nature and culture

For ages, mankind has been fascinated by rivers, not simply as natural resources and avenues of commercial conveyance, but also as symbols, metaphors and ideas. Countless artists, composers, writers and thinkers have pondered the significance of these wondrous bodies of water and how they impact on culture, society, geopolitics and, closer to our own time, the very future of our planet.

  23. TV pitches: So I've got this idea for a show ...

Two weeks from now, TV networks will announce their new slate of shows for next season. The majority of these series will be variations on a formula. Procedurals. High-concept sci-fi and fantasy dramas. Nighttime soaps. Comedies starring familiar faces. This is how it works. Out-of-the-ordinary shows tend to be too risky when the goal is big ratings.
