5. 12 places to visit in 2012

New Mexico: This year, New Mexicans mark 100 years of statehood. But much of the state's appeal stems from its human history that goes back much further. (In 2010, Santa Fe celebrated 400 years of cityhood.) Explore here: the adobe architecture and art galleries of Santa Fe; the vintage signage along old Route 66; the lingering hippie vibe of Truth or Consequences. Don't forget the Lightning Field, an art installation outside Quemado where (for $150 to $250 a person) you spend a summer night in a wood cabin and wait to see if lightning will strike one of the 400 tall steel poles outside your door. Even if there's no strike, the sky puts on shows at sunset and sunrise that will leave you in awe.

  11. "Shut Down Wall Street" Results In Tension, Arrests

The protesters named their Thursday morning operation "Shut Down Wall Street," even though it only called for people to demonstrate in front of the New York Stock Exchange. In the end, protesters did neither because thousands of cops were mobilized to move protesters away from the exchange. In the process, more than 200 people got arrested, and more than half a dozen officers were injured.

  15. A Timeline Of The Occupy Wall Street Eviction And Re-occupation

From the darkness of the very early morning Tuesday to the darkness of Tuesday night, Wall Street protesters have undergone an odyssey literally a journey from their protest home of the last two months, Zuccotti Park in the Financial District, from which they were evicted, to at least three other locations in the meantime, searching for another place from which they could center their demonstration against capitalist excess.
