9. End the debate

Last Week: While so much has caught our attention this week, including woman’s reproductive rights, campus security, right to privacy, race relations, a small story about the extinction of the Sestos Skipper and Rockland Grass Skipper butterflies caught my attention - hitting a deeper more profound chord. While the two butterflies in themselves may be appreciated by some for their aesthetic beauty, they were part of a web of interacting organisms with potential impacts to our supply of food and medicine. There is a past, present and future value for each living organism - but extinction is permanent - erasing any possibility for the future and more than likely affecting us in as yet unknown ways. As a barometer of the health of our environment and its longer term prospects, being able to identify local species is important to understanding our surroundings. When a species has permanently lost the ability to survive - that is a story that deserves our attention. We need to learn why and gain a broader understanding of the impact of such events.

  15. Carbon tax is best answer

America must lead the world in addressing the threat of climate change ("Climate change warnings," June 12). This is why Maryland Senators Ben Cardin and Barbara Mikulski must join Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and California Senator Barbara Boxer to work for the passage of the Climate Protection Act of 2013, which will put a price on carbon and shift the United States away from dirty energy and toward clean power. This landmark legislation will send a clear signal to the rest of the world that the United States is willing to back up its rhetoric with firm action when it comes to reducing carbon emissions.

  17. Levees, removable walls in plan to protect NYC

NEW YORK (AP) - Mayor Michael Bloomberg is proposing removable flood walls for much of lower Manhattan, a permanent 15-to-20-foot levee in part of Staten Island and a system of gates and levees at a Brooklyn creek as part of a nearly $20 billion plan to protect New York City from storms and global warming. Bloomberg's proposals in a speech Tuesday also include building dunes in Staten Island and the Rockaways, and considering building a levee and a new development at the South Street Seaport that would echo nearby Battery Park City. He's also suggesting giving $1.2 billion in grants to property owners to flood-proof their buildings. The speech stems from a study undertaken after Superstorm Sandy. Bloomberg says the city and Sandy relief will provide $10 million for these projects.

WASHINGTON — Emissions of heat-trapping greenhouse gases are growing at such a rate that the world will probably exceed a safe limit in average global temperatures by the end of the century and veer into a higher temperature zone that would profoundly damage economic growth and most other aspects of life, according to a new report by the International Energy Agency.
