(WGN-AM)- Former First Lady Patti Blagojevich is taking her husband's place on the reality show, "I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here."
A federal judge barred the former governor from leaving the country to do the show pending his political corruption trial in Chicago.
But the couple told NBC's "Today" show Thursday that Patti will appear on the network's upcoming season of the reality show, which will be filmed in Costa Rica.
Blagojevich openly admitted that she is doing the show for the money.
"In this terrible economic time I feel it is necessary to go to work and help support my family," she said. "My husband's an honest man.I truly believe he will be vindicated. But in the meantime we need to earn a living."
The former governor says that although he won't be a contestant, he will be involved with the show in some way. He also expressed that he did not see himself or his wife as a celebrity, but he was willing for Patti to take the opportunity.
"Neither one of us are celebrities," Rod Blagojevich said. "I prefer to be compared to people like Franklin Roosevelt and Teddy Roosevelt and Harry Truman and others in history, not some of these comparisons."
"I've been wrongly accused," he added. "I'll be vindicated. I'll prove my innocence. But both of us have our responsibilities to raise our children and try to keep our family in tact. And we've had a unique opportunity that most people in America who are losing their jobs don't get."
Patti Blagojevich said her involvement will also show that her profanity-laced comments in secret recordings by federal prosecutors don't reflect who she really is.
"I think people who know me know the truth behind those comments and I do look forward to the show as being an opportunity for people to see what I'm really like."
She added that she had no concerns of saying something that can be used against former Governor Rod Blagojevich in his upcoming fraud trial.
