Thanks to some brave customers, police have arrested a man they say robbed the 7-Eleven convenience store on South Miami Street.
Police say just after 4 Thursday afternoon, the 7-Eleven at 1827 S. Miami was held up, but several customers physically overpowered the suspect and held him until officers could make an arrest.
The suspect is identified as 29-year-old Adam Leonard of New Carlisle, who investigators say held a store employee at bay with a pair of scissors as Leonard allegedly demanded cash.
One of the customers, a 43-year-old South Bend man, was stabbed in the hand while tackling the suspect. He was taken to the hospital where he received stitches.
Police say during their interview with Leonard, he told investigators he robbed Bills Liquor on East Jefferson Blvd. in South Bend July 12 and tried to hold up the Speedway gas station on Mishawaka Avenue just before the liquor store robbery.
Police say the motive for the robberies is a raging drug habit. Leonard is being held in the St. Joseph County Jail.
