Twenty crew members of the Maersk Alabama finally returned home and their international drama ends. Among the men, we find ATM Zahid Reza, a West Hartford man. Reza is an an able seaman and crew member of the ship attacked by Somali pirates last week.
Reza reunited with his wife Elizabeth and son, Isa, at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland. He and fellow crew members shared their gripping stories of how pirates got on board their U.S. cargo ship.
"They called me back to lock down the ship and I started hearing gunshots," said one crew member, William Rios.
"I was on the bridge, and they started climbing on the port side. And they started fighting while they climbed. With AK-47s," said Reza.
Reza was among those who came face to face with one of the bandits, even managed to stab him in the hand with an ice pick.
Crew members are waiting for the return of their captain, Richard Phillips. Phillips is expected back on Friday afternoon.
