The former all-Big Ten honoree shot a 7-under-par 65 yesterday. He made eight birdie putts, including seven from 10 feet or closer, to go with a lone bogey for a two-shot lead over Harrison Frazar, Brian Davis, Marco Dawson and John Merrick at 67.
The 25-year-old won 1 million dollars in last year's rookie season on the PGA Tour. In the Reno-Tahoe Open, he made birdie putts of 10, 8, 9 and 7 feet on hole holes two through six, then made a 5-footer on the par-5 ninth to shoot a 31 on the front. He hit his second shot 314 yards to the back of the green's fringe on the 636-yard par-5 17th then got up and down from there for his last birdie of the day.
